My New Favorite Journaling Practice: The 5 Year Journal

I’ve been a lifelong journal-er and writer. So when a friend presented the idea of a 5-year journal, I was curious.

Here’s how it works:

You write a sentence or two each day for 5 years in the same journal.

Each page is the same date, 5 years in a row.

Example:

Jan 1, 2025

Jan 1, 2026

Jan 1, 2027

Jan 1, 2028

Jan 1, 2029

One sentence a day has been doable, sustainable, and I’ve never been more consistent in a journaling practice.

You can buy a specific 5 Year Journal or you can buy a blank journal like I did. Here’s the one I bought.

(I’m obsessed with it- it’s one of my favorite journals I’ve had. It’s hardcover, has a bookmark, and an elastic pen holder!)

I keep it next to my bed and usually write in the mornings or just before bedtime. It takes less than 2 minutes each day.

I’ve thumbed through the first several pages already- it’s wild to see how much is already different than it was in April when I began.

The 5-Year Journal is a much different approach to journaling than my Unhinged Journaling Practice that I talk about in this podcast episode here.

Enjoy!
